ABOUT HILARY YORK
“Tall and blonde, Hilary has this contralto voice that sounds like Marianne Faithfull today and delivers a punch with every note,” says longtime ATX music blog Flanfare. As novelist, fellow songwriter and music scribe Rick Alan Rice further observes, Houston native York ”doesn’t sound like a Texas girl, but rather like a smoky bi-continental with a knack for writing sharp lyrics and soulful rock melodies.”
York quips how she might be “a ’70s singer/songwriter stuck in the present.” Yet at the same time the Houston Press spotlights her contemporary appeal by hailing how "Hilary York knows how to create radio-friendly tunes without pandering to the audience.”
Over the course of three superb albums on her own Hey Miau Records, York has proven herself a shimmering gem in Austin’s musical treasure chest. Her 2006 debut, The Moon is aptly described as “romantic” by KUTX-FM deejay Laurie Gallardo. Her second release, In The Dark (2009), is “intimate, confessional, warm, sexy and sassy,” notes longtime Austin Chronicle reviewer Kent Benjamin, but at the same time it “jumps out of the speakers,” raves the San Antonio Express-News.
Hilary’s most recent album, simply and aptly titled 3, found York, the rocker with an acoustic guitar, produced by the Greyhounds. The results made 3 another winning collection that stood out from the crowd and showcased Hilary’s distinctive smarts, grace, melodic savvy and eloquent delivery that woos the ears to listen to the beguiling webs she weaves in song.
